I'm not sure I'll be able to resist making the cold trip up north for this one. Substance & Vainqueur team up with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra to present Scion Versions Live on October 16. Full event release follows, links and all:

‘Stirred by the desire to present a concert in an unusual setting and context, Kent Nagano has conceived the brand new series LES CONCERTS OSM ÉCLATÉS. Since his arrival in Montreal, Kent Nagano has been interested in the city’s historical structures, and had the idea of matching up the universes of orchestral music and the industrial world. The OSM and Kent Nagano will be performing works from the orchestral repertoire and will be bolstered, thanks to a collaboration with MUTEK, by the talent of practitioners of electronic music. This concert will be presented by Molson M in artistic partnership with MUTEK on Saturday, October 16, at 10 p.m. in a prominent place in the history of Montreal, the Molson Coors brewery.

Earlier this year we had the whole Kontrol crew on our radio show. this week we welcome back one of SF's Finest. with the new Album "Brick by Brick" set to be released shortly, we expect great things from this Cat. without further ado, please welcome back: Alland Byallo.

Alland is one of the busiest men in the San Francisco techno community. Having produced electronic music for over 10 years and DJing for nearly as long Alland come to be an international talent, releasing original material and remixes on respected US and European record labels such as Liebe*Detail, Floppy Funk, Utensil Recordings and Dirtybird among many others, and headlining events all over. His music, a blend of old and new elements of techno, house and minimal, is regularly charted and has been licensed to CD’s released by Universal, OM Records, Proton Music and Airdrop Music.

Alland’s involvement with music didn’t just start from splurging and buying some 1200’s. Having been raised with music since the age of 5 playing piano, and adding trumpet at age 11, it only seemed natural for Alland to follow up his skills and training by sharing his taste in quality music with people as a DJ, and pursuing production. Alland is always quite busy in the studio working hard on his own unique take on electronic dance music for his own Nightlight Music imprint and many other labels. In 2006 Alland founded ElektrUS. This private forum is made specifically to increase European interest in the American minimal techno / tech-house scene. By providing a simple, central and easy means of communication, ElektrUS streamlines the booking process and maximizes the productivity of tour booking ventures. The hope is to make the US a more fun and respectable place for the techno community, and a more profitable venture for European talent and agents. This forum was a large part of successful US techno bookings in 2007 and 2008, and is set to help more in the coming years.

Not only is Alland a resident, graphic designer and A&R for what is arguably the States’ most respected and notorious techno night, [KONTROL], he is also booked regularly as the opening act for influences such as Superpitcher, Trentemøller, Michael Mayer, Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y., Swayzak, Miss Kittin, Modeselektor, Claude VonStroke, Jeff Samuel, Heartthrob, Redshape, Ambivalent and many others. Alland has quickly grown to be one of the most in-demand Techno talents that SF has to offer. Among many great parties, 2007 saw Alland performing live at Seattle‘s Decibel Festival and DJing at Lovefest in San Francisco. n 2008 Alland played a fantastic DJ set on the Beatport Stage at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF Movement), a DJ performance at Decibel 2008, and played a successful European tour including gigs at such world famous clubs Panoramabar in Berlin and Propoganda Moscow. His recent tour of Europe saw him play rockin sets and building goodwill at such illustrious clubs as Harry Klein in Munich, Week End club Berlin, Uebel & Gefährlich and Kubik in Hamburg, and Cyprus' infamous Klub D. And now with his full-length album Brick By Brick due out this summer it’s obvious that the future looks bright for both him and his label, Nightlight Music.

‘The Parade’

The streets of the city are a non-stop parade of humanity. It’s a kind of grand, unchoreographed ballet of human locomotion. One of the great pleasures and measures of being urban is losing yourself in the crowd, with your feet and mind wandering, alone in your head but elbow to elbow with an inexhaustible supply of strangers.

The street etiquette of avoiding eye contact lets us go about our business without the distraction of interaction. Most people wear the New York “street face.” It’s a kind of neutral expression with a touch of “don’t mess with me.” It has a do-not-disturb aura. But the truth is that everyone is looking at everyone else all the time. It’s done on the sly, looking away when caught, often with instinctive pretense (as in, I wasn’t looking at you, but at that very interesting doorknob just behind you).

We can’t help it. We are fascinated by faces and bodies alike. Every face tells a story, and the story is a mystery. The clues abound and we read them instinctively in the blink of an eye. We categorize one another as bums, businessmen, tourists, models, etc., almost unconsciously. But what fun it is to stare, and revel in the passing faces, reading wardrobe, ethnicity, posture, age. Indeed, it’s a feast with every possible variation of the species on parade. By walking in their midst we too become a part of the constantly changing people-scape and offer our own version of the mystery.

Walking is life at its most immediate. The combination of people and places changes constantly and never repeats. It makes you small in the face of sheer numbers, but at the same time it’s reassuring. It’s nice to be one of the fish in this teeming sea.

The experimental Kyiv-based avant-folk arts collective DakhaBrakha mesmerized fans at the 2009 Gogol Fest celebrating the bicentennial of the legendary Ukrainian author's birth. Here's a video playlist I've compiled of their groundbreaking performances this year --

For all their studied eclecticism & avant-garde sensibilities, the group remains steeped in the various musical traditions of their native Ukraine. Their music has been described as Ethno-Chaos, for its dark, turbulent themes and often wild syntheses of folk musics from every corner of the world. I've been into this group for awhile, and it's exciting to see recently their effortless incorporation of new media into their performances.

Interesting factoid:

The square root of a positive integer may be rational or irrational, but is always real. The square root of a negative integer is always imaginary, and is plus-or-minus a real multiple of i. The square root of a multiple of i, however, can always be represented as a complex number — the sum of some real number and some imaginary number — and so can all other roots of all complex numbers. It can be said, then, that the complex numbers are as “complicated” as numbers can possibly be… at least, until we invent some new mathematical symbol to make it even worse.

The imaginary and complex numbers may seem like mathematical novelties with no real value whatsoever, but they do turn out to be useful in certain electrical engineering problems, as well as theoretical physics. (Tachyons, for instance, are particles that are supposed to travel faster than light, and therefore have imaginary mass.)

Soon after the success of the 12th Cup of Chi, Modul kicks off the follow-up with the driving tech-house "Acider" - a kind of free-jazz battle between a wobbling, ever-ruling bass-line, a catchy hook, and densely slurping textures. AMB, who seems to have been popping back to the breaks wing recently, takes over with the energetic "Flagpole" that you probably wouldn't label cruel - until you arrive at the drop in the breakdown perhaps. via Soundcloud, a charity drive that all musicians can participate in:

The organisers are asking artist, bands and labels to donate tracks via their SoundCloud Dropbox. These tracks will then be made available for streaming and download between the 5th and 19th February at the Twestival.fm website using a SoundCloud player. The site is hoping to raise $20,000 by asking visitors to leave a tip in a Radiohead ‘pay what you want’ style. All money raised will go directly to charity: water to help build five new drinking wells in places where many have no access to fresh water

This release has been making quite a buzz for some time, with Laurent Garnier, Phil K, Cass & Audio Soul Project already indicating a very positive opinion. In fact, the FCB remix was previously licensed to the Phil K compilation, HiFi. Ben Riva's sweeping violin play spices up both tracks, weaving through an excellently crafted, dub-delayed, ambient fabric in the original, and then as tangled up electric chords in the rough and glitchy drive of FCB's version, equipping the remix with a sneaky melodic hook.
